Magnox Celebrates Ambassadors

Magnox WylfaOn Friday 16 March we attended a marvellous day at Magnox Wylfa site in Anglesey. The event was planned and organised by Ambassador Lisa Morganandattended by many Ambassadors from the site. As a celebratory event for the 50 Ambassadors employed by Magnox it showcased the contribution that this key industry in North Wales makes to its community and the STEM enhancement and enrichment of the local young people.

The day was very well arranged to provide an enjoyable social event as well as making a serious point testifying to the value of Ambassadors in their community and to their employer.

Stuart Law presentationCerian Angharad presented an Employers Certificate of thanks to Stuart Law, Site Director, which is issued to only a few employers each year on behalf of STEMNET UK and signed by the government minister.

To complete the event we were treated to an entertaining chemistry presentation by Dr Andrew Davies of Bangor University. Andrew demonstrated a range of chemistry – based experiments from chemiluminescence to helium gas vocal enhancement as seen here in the photo with Lisa!

It is true to say that Anglesey not Cardiff was once the political power of the Celtic World in Wales and as they aspire to become the powerhouse or Energy Island of Wales we are assured that they continue to make an impressive impact with the help of their superb Ambassadors!

St Teilo’s School Assemblies

Eleanor Sherrard-Smith presentationMany activities took place during National Science and Engineering Week so I will cover a sample in each newsletter.

One enterprising school St Teilo’s School requested an Ambassador to attend for a 30 minute presentation at their assembly.

Thanks to Ambassadors Eleanor Sherrard-Smith, Michael Harbottle and David Hendry who attended the school. We had marvellous feedback from Natalie Neil, the teacher, sending a huge vote of thanks and lots of great photos that we will use. Here is Eleanor presenting her research on parasite migration!

Ambassador feedback

Schools are now becoming more aware of how valuable the Ambassadors are as a resource, but also that the Ambassadors have demands on their professional life too, so they are becoming more flexible as to dates and times rather than miss the opportunity of hosting a visit. Some recent comments from teachers and Ambassadors:

“The workshop with two of your Ambassadors from Tata Steel was a great success. The pupils really enjoyed the session and it has been a great help for them with their first BTEC assignment.”

Bethan Murphy Ysgol Y Strade

“Just thought I would let you know that the Mars Mission was fantastic in our after school club last week! Have taken lots of photographs for you also! Jana and myself really enjoyed it! Yes Jana is very good!”

Laura Smith teacher at St Phillip Evans, working with Ambassador Jana Witt

“I attended Llanhari School on Friday 23rd March and Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllw today 26th March. I would just like to say that Marc and Dewi were excellent hosts and I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the schools. I very much look forward to the next opportunity.”
