Dear STEM Ambassador

This year has seen new developments in the programme; the main feature is the Digital Platform. This innovation aims to improve your access to STEM Ambassador profile, update your own ‘activity records’, view a collation of recent requests across the network and also search though a vast catalogue of resources.

Access your profile by signing in at www.stem.org.uk with your email address and password.

STEM Ambassadors who need a new DBS and are unable to meet the Hub in person for the ID check can now nominate an External ID checker. Meetings with the Wales Hub are still provided but this facility will save much time. Please ensure that your DBS is still current – it is requirement in order to continue in the Programme.
Also, to be noted is the DBS Update Service, a valuable and free of charge service for STEM Ambassadors. When you renew your DBS you have 30 days to register the DBS number as a volunteer. This will validate your new DBS for use without having to be renewed as long as you wish to continue your STEM Ambassador role. A status check is all that will be required.

Naturally I will still provide you with local opportunities and support you in your STEM Ambassador role.

Renishaw’s Showcase Launch

On the 28th March I was pleased to be a guest at the launch of Renishaw new Fabrication Development Centre at the Miskin Pontyclun site.
The Centre offers a superb range of learning opportunities for Primary and Secondary students. The FDC programme and facilities have been developed with the express aim of introducing and enthusing learners in Engineering skills.

Read about Rensihaw’s fantastic opportunities here

The Centre was opened by Wing Commander Andy Green, holder of the World Land Speed Record working with Bloodhound SSC and aiming for the 1000 mph record.

The Bloodhound Supersonic car was on display for the pupils and guest who attended. The STEM Ambassador Team from Renishaw were exemplary tour guides and hosts.
Radyr Comprehensive pupils attended a show from Bloodhound Ambassadors, practical activities and a workshop. Schools book very quickly for free workshops, and the quality of these programmes was endorsed by teachers from Radyr School.

“We are so grateful for the school-business partnership we have with them. Thank you”

Renishaw are hosting Green Power Goblin Race final on  Saturday 9th June – STEM Ambassadors are welcomed at the event.
Going for Green – Goblin Power at Edwardsville Primary

STEM Ambassador Bob Love is an exemplary mentor and coach for the Edwardsville Green Goblin Racing team. Pupils at the school have been working on the Kit Car build since December; the call for support was made by teacher Catherine Price, Bob was a perfect match as a STEM Ambassador for his expertise and evident enthusiasm.

Since January Bob has visited the school each week, taking the pupils through a Wednesday Masterclass on project build, technical specifications of the car and gradually assembling the vehicle.
I was delighted to visit a session at the school. Hugely impressive work has been undertaken with the pupils learning the practical handling of tools, sustainable building, electronics and physics of forces and motion. Bob starts the sessions with a talk on the maths, engineering and physics before they begin a morning of work on the car.

A classroom has been set aside for the build, and that morning they assembled the brakes and tested the braking power.

Staffs have been immensely grateful for Bob’s support:

“Without his input and skill this would never have happened, he is like a member of the teaching staff now and has identified areas of weakness that we can work on to improve pupils learning, such as measurement and maths application – a real team asset!”
Catherine Price

“The best project ever!! I learned how to use a spanner and all about Ohms” Maisie

“Reading the wiring diagram was the most interesting thing, the acceleration was the best part of the build” Jack

“I learned how to use a screwdriver and spanner, I really enjoy this project”
Millie

Drivers, engineers and leaders will be selected for the finals and the team will be on show at Renishaw Green Goblin Race  Saturday June 9th
Wishing them the best of success! They are hoping to raise funds for some smart team outfits.

Science Week at Crickhowell High School

As part of National Science Week, Crickhowell High School pupils celebrated by taking part in a number of exciting STEM activities. The week began with a trip to the Big Bang Fair at the NEC where pupils enjoyed the many STEM workshops, demonstrations and exhibitors on hand to inspire and enthuse the Year 9 pupils.

This was followed by a circus of STEM events at the school supported by local STEM Ambassadors. They included a Dragster Workshop, the Marine Conservation Society talking about ‘Plastic pollution’. A bridge building task, Forensic workshop, Mystery boxes and a Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water workshop.

Maths teacher Mrs Hand remarked ‘The students really enjoy these types of activities; it gives them an opportunity to try new skills and think about the possibilities of a STEM career’.

‘I’ve really enjoyed all the activities today; my favourite has been making and racing the dragsters’. Tom Year 7 pupil

STEM Ambassador Matt Gillie, who ran the forensic workshops said, ‘It was great to see that pupils found out that Science is actually useful!’

‘Thank you to all the STEM Ambassadors who took time to help make this Science Week such a success. There has been a real buzz around the school and the pupils have really enjoyed the variety of activities on offer’. Science teacher Kelly Holmes

A new Initiative for Teenagers

Youth Cymru’s
British Science Week Event took place on Saturday 10th March.
9 STEM Ambassadors delivered workshops to 50 young people 14 – 19 yrs attending Youth Clubs and Home Educated pupils.
The workshops were an open planned event where visitors could drop into sessions at their leisure. The Tramshed in Cardiff was chosen as an informal setting which would appeal to Youth groups not usually drawn to Science events.

Workshops covered: Computer Programming; Automated Car demos; Cancer Research; Genetics; General Dynamics Apprenticeships; Network Rail interactive challenge; Lego Mindstorms.
Wales Gene Park Education Outreach Dr Rhian Morgan brought a wonderful array of practical activities; Dr Valentina Flamini delivered an engaging talk and activity on her research. All teenagers stayed for the duration of the morning voluntarily.

“Best part was that we could discuss things with people and their presentations were really good”
“Valentina was really good, taking time to talk through the facts of her cancer research helped me understand the points she made. People are usually very brief and don’t take time to explain”
Young attendees

Youth Cymru are now planning to incorporate a Science Pavilion in their Summer Camp weekend in Bridgend
