Case studies to feature

In celebration of National Apprenticeship Week 6th -12th February, some of us at See Science have enrolled on a level 3 Digital Learning Practitioner apprenticeship course. The apprenticeship benefits us here in many ways, and being able to continue to work whilst having the opportunity to fill a gap in our knowledge is hugely advantageous. There are many different levels of apprenticeships covering a variety of subject areas. Some of our STEM Ambassadors have completed apprenticeships and have forged a successful career due to the qualification and work placement training that is afforded with apprenticeships. If you are a STEM Ambassador who would like to share your experience of going through an apprenticeship programme then please look out for opportunities to
attend careers fairs. It’s at careers fairs and networking events for students that you can get the chance to share your experience. Alternatively if you are in an organisation and you offer apprenticeship schemes then students will benefit greatly from hearing directly the advantages of apprenticeships from employers. If you feel you would like to help celebrate National Apprenticeship Week then please get in touch as there are many careers events that you could attend to share your experiences

The resources and activities are available all year round so you can make any of your CEIAG / Careers activities come to life – whenever you do them. (But of course we’d really love you to get involved in NCW!) Details here.

Energy Quest Workshops

All state funded schools in the UK are eligible to receive at least 1 Energy Quest workshop and eligible schools can receive as many as 8! Funded by Shell, over the last six years EngineeringUK has developed Energy Quest into a well-received programme, reaching 215,000 young people through 3,150 sessions in 1,460 UK schools

Energy Quest is a free two-hour workshop aimed at KS3 pupils. Through an exciting narrative, students are challenged to save the day by utilising their practical engineering skills and find a solution to help a group of young people in danger. During the challenge, students encounter a range of engineers as they uncover the skills engineers possess and the way energy plays an important role in all our lives.

See Science will be delivering the workshops throughout this coming year. We are keen for STEM Ambassadors to support the delivery of the workshops

British Science Week 2023 10 - 19 March

British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths run by the British Science Association (who also run CREST Awards). The Week takes places this year on 10-19 March.

The activity packs are a free resource provided by the British Science Association, full of activities based around the theme of ‘Connections’, designed to be run in nurseries, schools and at home.

There are three packs, each catering for different age groups, so there’s something for everyone! The Early Years pack has activities for the littlest learners – under 5s. The Primary pack is for ages 5-11, and the Secondary pack is designed for young people aged up to 14. These age groups are of course just guidelines, and the activities can be adapted depending on the age group you’re working with.

Activity packs and all details here.

Over the spring term our topic is mechanics, we are looking at this in two parts - our question is... How does technology positively impact our lives? In the first half of the term we will be looking in particular at the impact on people with disabilities. In the second part of the term, how mechanics has a positive impact on the environment, in particular renewable energy etc. As this is the topic being studied this term then dates are flexible.

STEM Careers Advice. - Speed Networking
21st March  2023

Rebecca Flanagan is currently organising a free careers event with the aim of informing learners about the various careers, courses and training available to them after school. This will be the fifth careers event we have done in Ceredigion and I am looking for some employers to represent careers in the  STEM sectors. There will be around 90 employers attending. They will provide information about careers and jobs in their sector.

Young people will be able to find out about:

  • Jobs
  • Careers
  • Apprenticeships
  • Training routes and courses

This is an excellent opportunity for pupils to get information from people in industry. They can find out what employers look for when recruiting their workforce and get an insight into the world of work.

Careers advisers will be there on the day too. They can provide information about getting into different jobs, courses, and qualifications.
