Swansea Science Festival

The Swansea Science Festival returned  on the weekend of  26th and 27th October 10am - 4pm, at the National Waterfront Museum -the largest Festival of its kind in Wales! We were delighted that the festival welcomed 2120 people through the doors on Saturday and  2784 on the Sunday.

The Festival kicked off with a pre-weekend highlight at the Taliesin on Friday, 25th October, featuring 'The Magical Mr West' and his enchanting performance, Crafty Fools. The grand finale on Monday, 28th October, showcased the much-loved TV presenter Andy Day with his exciting show, Andy’s Dino Rap.

Throughout the weekend there were free  exhibitions showcasing groundbreaking research at Swansea University where members of the public could just drop in to explore hydrogen energy, meet robotic dogs and cats, uncover the secrets of ancient Egyptian mummification, and even learn how to love a maggot!
The Swansea University Maggot Research Group have spent many years
looking at the science behind a particular wound therapy, available worldwide,
and on UK NHS Prescription, called Maggot Therapy.

We have discovered and isolated key antibacterial and biological molecules
secreted by maggots, which work to disinfect and heal chronic wounds.
BUT, public awareness and knowledge regarding the clinical use of maggots to
heal wounds is not very well communicated or understood in the UK, nor are
these lovely and useful creatures looked upon very favourably by the public! The Love a Maggot! exhibit is designed to turn the fear, disgust or disdain for
maggots on its head! It aims to change the cultural pre-existing negative perceptions towards maggots, and showcase what these marvellous maggots
can do, the science behind what they do, and whythey should be revered and loved by all!!

There were also lots of hands-on workshops and inspiring talks that delve into the mysteries of oceans, the wonders of electricity, and the incredible stories of people shaping our world and  highlights over the weekend  included a science rap workshop with presenter Jon Chase, insightful talks with TikTok star Big Manny, renowned explorer Ray Mears, and wildlife TV presenter Megan McCubbin.

Whether you're making, exploring, or discovering, there was  something to inspire everyone at the Swansea Science Festival

Institution of Civil Engineers(ICE) Wales Annual Awards Dinner

STEM Ambassador Wales staff, Hayley and Louise, were delighted to be invited along to the Institution of Civil Engineers(ICE) Cymru Annual Awards Dinner. The Institution of Civil Engineers is the world's oldest professional engineering body.

The ICE STEM Ambassador of the Year Award 2024 was awarded to Dominic Henson AtkinsRéalis. Dominic has worked extensively to encourage young people into the industry. Dominic’s award was presented by ICE President Prof. (Dr) Anusha Shah.

It was a wonderful celebration of the successes of the ICE members in Wales.  Congratulations to all award recipients.

Quote from Dominic (ICE STEM Ambassador of the year)

I wanted to become a STEMM ambassador to spread awareness of apprenticeships. When I was in school I was told I should go to university and when I said I didn't want to, I received nearly no support or guidance. Through my sessions I'm hopefully showing pupils other opportunities to enter employment.

Over the past year, I have actively engaged with students in schools and colleges through various initiatives, including careers fairs, presentations, Q&A panels, and mock interviews. I find great fulfilment in these sessions, as they provide an opportunity to share my journey and inspire students to explore different career paths and avenues into industry.

Winning this award is incredibly meaningful to me. It represents not only personal recognition but also a validation of the hard work and dedication I have invested in supporting students. This award motivates me to continue sharing my experiences, and I hope to inspire others to become STEMM Ambassadors as well.

National Engineering Day 13 November 2024

Since November 2019, the Academy has led a national awareness day to raise public awareness of how engineers make a difference in the world and celebrate how engineers shape the future.

The theme for National Engineering Day 2024 is 'engineering role models'.

Our national awareness day aims to make the UK's engineers and engineering more visible and celebrate how they improve everyday lives and shape the world around us for the better. This year, we want to move the public to marvel at engineers, be amazed by their achievements, and be awestruck by their feats of engineering.

We are asking engineers a question: who inspired you to be who you are today?

Our research shows that engineering-specific role models are a strong influencing factor on young people to choose engineering. So we are seeking role models to inspire the next generation to take up careers in engineering - and we need your help. In a bid to recruit a new, more diverse generation of engineers, we're asking for nominations of engineering role models.

If you know an inspirational engineering role model, please ask for their permission to nominate them. On National Engineering Day we will be unveiling statues of your chosen role models, brought to life in creations fit to move and inspire the next generation.Download our toolkit to find out more about the many ways you and your organisation can get involved with National Engineering Day.

How to explain your job to an 8yr old
Image

November 28th online

We are offering a training session called 'How to explain your job to an 8 year old', which will be run online between 4pm and 5pm.

This session will cover the best ways of breaking down a complicated job title into bite-sized chunks that young people can understand. It is so important that students find out about a range of amazing careers that they can one day go into, but too often they are confused by the jargon and lack the knowledge required to understand what the job is. Get some tips on how to help young people learn about the different things they can do in life and have a go at formulating your explanation of your own job.

This user support session can be accessed using the Teams link in the URL above, which will also be sent to your STEM Ambassador email account the day before the session. More information here

We're looking for mentors to join us for the Industrial Cadets Bronze project in the North Wales area! This is a STEM competition where a team of year 8/9 pupils take part in a 20hr STEM project, competing against other schools in their region. It helps students to develop key skills for learning, life and work and to inform their subject choices and careers at a crucial point where they will be choosing the subjects they go on to study in KS4. The project will launch virtually and interaction can either be face to face or virtual depending on location. You will be invited to a face to face celebration event at the end of the academic year. F1 in Schools Support

Tywyn Secondary School, Station Road, Tywyn, LL36 9EU

19th November

30 pupils have been selected to represent the school in this year's F1 in Schools competition and are starting to design F1 cars using Autodesk software. The majority of pupils are new to the competition and haven't used the software before. But the competition involves much more than just designing a car- pupils also have to develop a brand identity, present a verbal pitch to the judges and test their cars using scientific knowledge. Any help that we could have, either virtually or in person to support and encourage our pupils would be amazing!
